Margaret River: The wine region that wins 90 % of wine trophies and how to spend a Perfect Saturday there

The perfect Saturday in Margaret River… Margaret River is a small surf town located 3 hours south of Perth in Western Australia. “Margs” as the locals call it is known for pristine beaches, gnarly surf breaks, boutique wineries and local produce which can be found at the farmers market in town every Saturday.

Margaret River is famous for having a climate that is similar to Bordeaux in a dry year. That allows wine producers to make some of the best Cabernet Sauvignon in the country. The other star of the show is Chardonnay which some say rivals the best Burgundy in quality but is available at much more reasonable price points! The classic white blend of the region is Sauvignon Blanc Sémillon (SBS) or Sémillon Sauvignon Blanc (SSB) – think white Bordeaux with an Australian twist.

What does a perfect Saturday look like in Margs? You wake up and have some local organic eggs and coffee for breakfast, then head down to one of the many beautiful beaches. After catching some waves you dive for cray fish. These can be as big as a man’s arm and are actually called western rock lobsters. On the way home you stop off and get a few bottles of wine from one of the many world famous local vineyards like Xanadu and some fresh veg at the farmer’s market. That sets you up for a great afternoon relaxing with friends in the garden grilling crayfish and drinking SBS/SSB or Chardonnay while you play Finska (Australians can’t pronounce Mölkky so it is called Finska there and is quickly becoming very popular backyard sport)!

There are plenty of other seafood options for Margaret River white blends like Xanadu Exmoor Sauvignon Blanc Sémillon (SBS) 2020. Pan-friend scallops with a pea purée work really well as does season’s asparagus with hollandaise sauce. If you are feeling adventurous, you could try to find some calamari to grill. This is delicious with a squeeze of fresh lemon juice and some mayonnaise and goes perfectly with an ice cold glass of Xanadu SBS. Somebody please take me back!
